However, their numbers multiplied rapidly, as did their outward migration. In response to the damage caused to woodlands, a Highland Squirrel Club was formed in 1903 with the purpose of hunting, trapping, and killing the squirrels. Financial incentives were provided for those who sent in squirrel tails. By 1946, the Highland Squirrel Club had killed 102,900 squirrels and paid out \u00a31,504 in bounties.
